A: Guess what? Yesterday I was driving happily over the expressway, but the police stopped me.
B: What’s the matter with you?
A: In fact, I was driving my car at 40km/h above the speed limit…
B: Oh…, you should obey the rules. If you keep on doing so, you may run over someone, and then you’ll find yourself in prison after all.
A: It matters nothing to me. I’ll get away from the police. I’ll do it!
B: You are like an runaway from the prison.
A: No way!
B:.Just kidding. Well…, by the way, is there any incident of jailbreaks actually? I have seen those only in the movies. I haven’t seen any in reality.
A: OK, I’ll tell you. Jailbreaks mean that prisoners get away from the jail they are confined in, don’t they? Naturally, if their escapes are found, they are heavily punished. Even today, there are jailbreaks actually, although they aren’t so many.
B: That’s news to me. I want to know some.
A: A lot of movies have been created that focus on jailbreaks whether in Japan or abroad. “The Escape from Alcatraz”, for example. The scene of this story is at the Alcatraz Island Prison in San Francisco Bay, which is called “The Lock”.
B: Oh〜, it’s famous isn’t it?
A: Yeah. In that story, the main character, Frank Morris came up with the idea of escaping from the air hole of his cell. And finally, he did it!
B: Oh, that’s great! But it’s the story in the US, isn’t it? Is there any case in Japan?
A: In Japan, “The King Of Escape ”,SHIRATORI Yoshie is a very famous jailbreaker. He succeeded in the escape from 4 prisons including “the Abashiri Prison”, which is famous because it was said to be the most difficult prison to escape from.
B: What else?
A: He accomplished his escapes 4 times in 26 years in prison. In total that means he was 3years away from the prison! In addition, he was such a strong man that he could carry two rice straw bags with his each hand.
B: He was so crazy!
A: And he spent many years rusting his handcuffs by using the salt from Miso-soup served as his meals.
B: Unbelievable!! I’m so surprised. Well, has there been any change in the jailbreaks, the number, for example?
A: In Japan after the W.W.Ⅱ,there were a lot of prison breakers – about 10 in 1000(one percent) – because the peace over the country was confused and security system wasn’t enough. But now, there are about less than one in 1000.
B: That show the situation and the secutiry system have improved. But what they are doing after getting out of the jails? I wonder if they end up in prison again…
A: Acutually, most of them are arrested again about 2 days on average after their escape. However, there have been a few brutal criminals until now.
B: Even so, I feel frightened to imagine that criminals are living around us. It might happens that my neighbor is a prisoner!!
A:I don’t think so, and even if maybe so, the police will protect you from jailbreakers. Anyway, I’ll follow the law from now so that I won’t be put into prison.
